How long does it take for a directory backlink to be indexed by Google?

There is no fixed time: a directory backlink can be discovered within days or never, depending on whether the listing page itself gets crawled and indexed. LinkPing does not yet have indexing-time measurements, and as of 2026-10-20 it tracks 111 of 128 dofollow directories where such a link would be worth waiting for.

Updated Markdown version

A backlink only helps once Google has crawled the page it sits on. Directory listings are often deep pages with few internal links, so they may be crawled slowly. Moderated directories also do not publish the listing until a review is complete.

What affects the delay

  • Whether the directory is crawled often (large, popular sites usually are).
  • How many internal links point to your listing page.
  • Whether the directory adds it to a sitemap.
  • Whether the listing is published immediately or after a review.

What to do

  1. Confirm the listing is live and visible in a logged-out browser.
  2. Check it with a site: search or the URL Inspection tool if you own the page (you usually do not).
  3. Share the listing page from places that are crawled often.
  4. Do not pay for indexing services. They cannot control Google.
Data pending. LinkPing does not yet have enough submission records to publish time-to-index for directory backlinks, and we will not estimate it. LinkPing is measuring this; results will be published in the monthly Directory Index at /data once the sample is large enough to be meaningful.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my directory listing not indexed?

Common reasons are that it is not yet approved, it is blocked by robots rules or a noindex tag, or the directory is rarely crawled.

Can I force Google to index a backlink?

Not directly. You can help discovery by linking to the page from crawled places, but Google decides.
