What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a Markdown file served at the root of a site (/llms.txt) that gives language models a short, curated map of the site: what it is and which pages matter. The format is proposed at llmstxt.org. It is a proposal, not a standard that every crawler honours, so treat it as a cheap hint, not a ranking lever.

The format this tool follows

  1. An H1 with the name of the site or project. This is the only required part.
  2. A blockquote right below it with a one-sentence summary.
  3. Optional paragraphs or lists with more detail (no headings).
  4. Zero or more H2 sections, each a list of links written as - [Name](https://url): optional notes.
  5. A section called Optional marks links a model can skip when its context is short.

How to read the validator results

  • Error: the file breaks the format (no H1, an HTML page served instead of Markdown, an invalid URL). Fix these first.
  • Warning: it parses, but a model gets less from it (no summary, relative links, list items that are not links).
  • Info: style notes such as an oversized file or free text inside a section.

Do I need llms.txt to appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers?

No. No major AI product has committed to reading it, and most citations come from normal crawled pages. It costs minutes to publish and is harmless, which is the whole case for it.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of your domain so it resolves at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, served as text/plain or text/markdown with status 200. In Next.js, add a route handler or a file in public/.

What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

llms.txt is a short index of links. llms-full.txt is an optional second file that inlines the full text of those pages for models that want everything in one request.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt tells models what is worth reading. They do not replace each other.

Why does the validator say my file looks like HTML?

Many sites return their 404 page with status 200 for unknown paths. If the response starts with an HTML tag, there is no llms.txt at that address.
